The Shocking Truth about Vitamin C

What I am about to share with you is eye-opening and a must-read if you are one of millions who consume Vitamin C supplements expecting they will help keep you and your loved ones healthy.

Because they don’t. And they won’t. 

Unless you are taking whole food Pure Vitamin C instead of Vitamin C supplements you are not getting any Vitamin C.

If you are taking a Vitamin C supplement, I’m sorry to inform you that it is not the Vitamin C you think it is.

Here are the facts…

All Vitamin C supplements contain one individual molecular compound: Ascorbic acid. Ascorbic acid is not a vitamin and it’s not Vitamin C. It’s basically useless unless it's combined with a complex of elements that make up Vitamin C.

However, pharmaceutical companies, to persuade us otherwise, have spent vast sums of money and been extraordinarily successful in perpetuating the myth that ascorbic acid is Vitamin C.

To understand why the Vitamin C you are buying is not Vitamin C, let’s look at what, and what does not, constitute a vitamin.

Vitamins are not individual molecular compounds. Vitamins are biological complexes.
Vitamins are biochemical interactions that can only activate when all the components of the vitamin complex are present and working together.


When isolated from its complex, a vitamin cannot perform its intrinsic function and is, in fact, not a vitamin. For example, because ascorbic acid, which is the ingredient used in all synthetic Vitamin C supplements, is only one component in a chain of complexes that make up Vitamin C, it is not a vitamin, and it is wrong and irresponsible for manufacturers to label it Vitamin C.

Why is this important for you to know? Because synthetic ‘Vitamin C’ supplements are the biggest single category in the vitamin and mineral market with annual sales of more than $250 million dollars a year.

But what’s most important is the fact that millions believe their 1000 or 2000mg Vitamin C supplements ward off colds, kill off cancer cells, and prevent any number of illnesses and diseases. And that’s not so.

Here’s what’s really important to understand about Vitamin C:

Here's the key: For Vitamin C to be Vitamin C it must contain, in addition to ascorbic acid: rutin, bioflavonoids, Factor K, Factor J, Factor P, ascorbinogen, ascorbinogen bioflavonoids, and tyrosinase. Ascorbic acid is the “antioxidant wrapper" that protects the functional parts of the vitamin from rapid oxidation or breakdown.

Additionally, mineral co-factors must be present and in proper amounts. If any of those components are missing, there is no Vitamin C––no vitamin activity. And when only some of them are present in the body, the body has to draw on its own stores to make up the difference.

So you can see that Vitamin C activity can only take place when all conditions and co-factors are present.

Would you like to know what ascorbic acid is made from?
It’s a derivative from cornstarch and sulfuric acid. In your body it acts as a drug with toxic effects. Mega doses can increase your white blood cell count.

In the United States, over 90% of ascorbic acid is manufactured at a facility in Nutley, New Jersey, owned by DSM Nutritional, originally Hoffman-LaRoche, one of the world’s biggest drug manufacturers. Vitamin companies purchase ascorbic acid from this single facility and market it as Vitamin C.

And, of course, each company uses its arsenal of marketing tactics to compete in a very competitive marketplace. They all claim their formulation is superior, even though they all get their ascorbic acid from the same place, and even though it’s really not vitamin C at all.

Two things distinguish it; it’s manmade; it does not occur in nature.
Stick with me now because this next part is crucial to your making certain that when you purchase Vitamin C you're actually getting Vitamin C.

First thing to understand, there is a significant difference between a vitamin and a vitamin’s activity. A vitamin is a biochemical complex. Vitamin activity is the actual biological and cellular changes that take place within the vitamin complex.

So you see, the ascorbic acid you buy, innocently thinking you are buying Vitamin C, is just a fragment of the complex that makes up Vitamin C. Real Vitamin C is alive. It is a whole food. Synthetic, ascorbic acid is not alive; it is dead. Synthetic fractionated chemical ascorbic acid is not a food, and not a nutrient. By itself it has no vitamin activity, which was proven by the discoverer of Vitamin C, the Nobel Prize laureate, Dr. Albert Szent-Georgi who discovered Vitamin C way back in 1937.

Another thing that’s really important for you to know: Vitamins are only necessary in minute quantities. Another falsehood peddled by the manufacturers of synthetic Vitamin C is that it’s good to take a lot of it. Actually, ascorbic acid is toxic and a whole lot of it is very toxic by depleting the body's own mineral reserves.

And the body can only absorb small amounts of Vitamin C; so taking 1000mg of Vitamin C is wasting money.

Whole food Vitamin C, by contrast, is not toxic at all because it is a whole, natural food complex.

Ascorbic acid, Szent-Georgi discovered, is the outer shell of the Vitamin C complex. Its function is to protect the complex so they can perform their individual and interrelated synergistic functions. (A synergistic effect is something that affects something else.)

Vitamins are living complexes, which contribute to other higher living complexes.

The body cannot make most vitamins. They must be ingested as food. Whole, natural foods are rich in vitamins. Or used to be. But soils have been so disastrously depleted and deluged with pesticides, pollution, and erosion that foods grown today in American soil contain a fraction of the nutritional value they had fifty years ago.

And that has led to the emergence of vitamin and mineral supplements in our diets.

Whole food Vitamin C contains many essential trace minerals essential to their synergistic operation. Synthetic ‘vitamins’ contain no trace minerals, and to make matters worse, they deplete the body’s own mineral reserves.

Make no mistake, the manufacturers of synthetic Vitamin C have only one motive––profit. And so millions of unsuspecting consumers, eager to maintain their health and the health of their loved ones, spend hard earned money on Vitamin C supplements that rob the bodies reserves making continued use counterproductive.

There are over a hundred companies in America alone that sell what they claim is Vitamin C. Less than 5% actually do sell the real deal: whole food Vitamin C.

Why so few? Well, it doesn’t take an astrophysicist to figure that out. Just follow the money. Whole food vitamins are expensive to produce. Organic whole food vitamins, even more so. I believe that one of the best sources is organic whole food vitamins that are made by taking a vitamin-rich plant and in a cold vacuum process removing the water and fiber and freeing it from chemicals thus capturing intact the biological complex and retaining its functional and nutritional integrity.

When you ingest organic whole food Vitamin C your body does not have to draw on its own reserves in order to complete any missing elements from the vitamin complex, as is the case with synthetic Vitamin C.

The marketing mavens have been frighteningly successful in creating the myth that vitamins and minerals, isolated from one other and measured out in ‘proper’ quantities, are beneficial.

Do the vitamin and food manufacturers want us to take charge of our own health by eating natural, organic foods and taking whole food vitamins?

No. They do not.

The marketing of synthetic Vitamin C has been so successful that almost all nutritionists, therapists, doctors, and health practitioners are unaware that synthetic Vitamin C contains no vitamin C, and furthermore, have been led to believe that some brands of synthetic Vitamin C are more potent than others.

The truth is, the higher the potency of ascorbic acid the more drug-like its effects, robbing the body of it's mineral reserves. Organic natural whole food Vitamin C is lower in potency. As it should be. Low potency is all you need. More is not better.

One way to know you are not getting Vitamin C but a synthetic is by reading the recommended dosage. Synthetic vitamins are refined, high potency chemicals, and therefore are measured in milligrams, just like drugs. This hasn’t anything to do with vitamin activity or nutrition.
